Wheat Ridge STEM Program! Battle Bots and Gone Boarding
The Wheat Ridge STEM Program is a group of high school students at Wheat Ridge High School who are interested in engineering. This is not limited to any grade level, we are composed of 9th graders through 12th graders. Established in August of 2014, the team’s goal was to design and build a carbon fiber vehicle that would be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.
Program started in 2014 with building different types of car to
race.
They have branched into Battle Bot where in the last 2 years they have won first prize at the National Robotic League Meeting.
They are now working on a NASA rover. The school has the biggest public 3D printer in the state of Colorado.
There are over 50 students in the program and they fundraise over $40,000 to keep the program going.
In 2026 the Gone Boarding program was created. It is program where students make skis, snowboards, skateboards, paddle boards, and take them on trips outside to use them. The program started in Grand Rapids, MI. Currently the students are fundraising and hope to meet their goal and start the program in the fall. They have a $30k fundraising goal and have raised about $18k. If they are successful they’ll be the only school in Jeffco with this program. The project is currently being helped by the art and engineering teachers, and the students learned about this program from their classes. The students are excited about the hands-on nature of the project and being able to use the boards they’ve built to go outside.
The team was composed of 16 students in the first year, This year our program has reached about 80 people. Many of our students start the class with little to no experience. The goal of this involved project is to teach students how to work together as they design, manufacture, assemble, and compete. This year we are excited to be working on a new project; Vintage Mini-roadster. In addition, the students will be working on drone and rocket projects, as well as learning the 3D solid modeling program Solid Works. We are excited for another year of success.
